Battle¶
In order to unlock Mao as a playable unit, you need to complete all of the maps in the DLC episode titled The Field Trip. Mao can be a decent character to use, as his unique Evility is one of the better ones out of the DLC, since anything that adds to just damage is better than stats. He has high aptitudes with both ATK and INT, which means he can be good with swords (S rank) and even some magic, the latter of which he learns up to Omega Ice and Mega Star naturally.

Overload¶
Mao’s Overload is called Astaroth Reform and it increases the stats of the equipment of all allies on the map by 50% for three turns. This can be a good Overload early on and during the mid-game, but once you reach the higher echelon of maps, like the Carnage Dimension ones, then it will probably become less useful. The reason it becomes less useful is because you’re going to be maxing the stats on your equipment in the true endgame, so having it boosted it worthless.
Evilities¶
Mao’s unique Evility is called Live Experiment, which increases the damage dealt by allies within three panels by 20%, while also increases the damage received by enemies within three panels by the same amount. Essentially, if an enemy and an ally are within that three panel range, the enemy will take 40% extra damage. With the right combination, Mao can become one of the better characters to have standing next to your allies. Star Gazing increases star damage dealt by 20%, while also decrease the star damage taken by 20%. Star magic/damage is probably one of the lesser resisted forms of damage, so this can be a good Evility on a mage.
Weak Searcher increases the critical rate by 20% whenever you have glasses items equipped. This can be a great option in the early to mid-game, but as you get into the endgame, you probably won’t still be using glasses on characters, due to the higher tier items like Exodus, Arcadia and Trapezohedron. The last common Evility from Mao is a good one, as Improved Alchemy basically makes it possible to produce Chara World items whenever this character has it equipped and is the leader of the Alchemy Squad. This makes it much easier to traverse the Chara World and should be put on anyone you’re not really using.
