This page details how to defeat The Duelist - Herbert du Lilibonne, one of the Frankish Nobles required to unlock the We Nobles Three achievement. You’ll find Herbert northwest of Coteaux de la Seine, in Amienois.
How to Defeat The Duelist - Herbert du Lilibonne¶
As you approach the farmland where Herbert is waiting, you’ll hear him boasting about his skill in battle. Speak with him to hear more, then follow him to the arena, which is actually a sheep pen. Once inside, you’ll have the opportunity to assassinate Herbert with a stealth attack, which will kill him immediately if you’re successful with the second Advanced Assassination. This is the easiest way to defeat Herbert, and will put an end to his ramblings.
If you’d rather fight Herbert honorably, just wait for him to stop talking in the sheep pen. He’ll eventually begin the fight. As a spear wielder, Herbert has a good reach with his weapon, so you’ll need to be careful not to be caught off guard. You’ll find weak points on Herbert’s left leg and right arm, which you should aim to hit as soon as possible to weaken his defences.
If you keep your distance from Herbert long enough, he’ll use a red rune aura special ability which will set his spear on fire, allowing him to inflict more damage. Herbert also has two other red rune aura abilities which are activated in melee. One involves him spinning around and slashing at you with his spear, while the other is an overhead slam with his spear. You won’t be able to block or parry these, so you should dodge or roll away from him as soon as you see the red aura appear. His only other red rune aura ability comes in the form of him throwing a javelin at Eivor, so you’ll need to look out for the red markers above your head to indicate when this is incoming.
Aside from the red rune aura attacks, Herbert will often use a chain attack which is indicated by an orange aura. This can be blocked or parried, but you’ll need to be confident with your timing to avoid being hit multiple times in a row, which on high difficulty settings could be fatal if you’re not careful. If you’d rather dodge or roll out of the way, this is also a reliable method of avoiding the chain attacks. Alternatively, you can use a special ability to interrupt Herbert in the chain animation.
If you decide not to assassinate Herbert before the real fight begins, you might find that you’re in for a more difficult fight than his ramblings suggested. The combination of long reach with his spear and relentless strikes make it difficult to find a breather in this fight, but if you’re aware of the main attacks and you follow the steps above, you should be able to avoid the worst of what Herbert can dish out.
