This quest begins immediately after Where the Stone Falls. In order for this quest to become available, you must have chosen either Hunwald or Aelfgar as the new Ealdorman of Lincolnscire, leading to the attempted coup instigated by Herefrith.
Now that you have him on the run, it’s time to hunt down Herefrith. Speak with Hunwald and Aelfgar at the end of the southern bridge into Lincoln. After the brief conversation, follow them along the road south. Once you reach the camp at Wynmere Lake, stock up on arrows if you need to and then speak with the captain to begin the assault.
Assault on Anecastre¶
Breach the Gate¶
The assault on Anecastre will begin like any other, in that you’ll need to help your warriors bring the battering ram to the gates. This battering ram is a big one, and will take some time to reach the gate. As you edge closer to the gate, you’ll need to brace with your shield each time you see a red circle appear around the battering ram. This will ensure that you and your warriors aren’t damaged by incoming arrow volleys.
When you reach the gate, you won’t need to move the battering ram back and forth. Instead, this one has a mechanism within which can swing the timber back and forth with relative ease. All you need to do is initiate the strike by holding your attack button until you see a golden aura surround Eivor, at which point you should release to strike the gate. This won’t take long to achieve, and you’ll only need to strike the gate three to four times before it’s destroyed.
Destroy the Blockade¶
Once you’ve breached the first gate, you’ll need to destroy the wooden blockade beyond it, marked by a teal objective. This can be done in one of two ways, as Eivor suggests: find a a nearby fire pot to throw at the blockade, or use a springald. The springald is located directly east of the blockade, atop a wooden tower. You’ll find plenty of fire pots surrounding a well just north of the blockade. It’ll take about three hits with the springald to destroy the blockade, or one fire pot thrown at it. Destroy the gate in whatever way you prefer, and kill any soldiers that stand in your way.
Lower the Drawbridge¶
After you’ve destroyed the blockade, you’ll need to head deeper into the fortress to the west, where you’ll find a drawbridge. This will be marked by a teal objective. You’ll need to shoot the links on either side of the drawbridge to lower it, but this can’t be done from the archway in front of it. Instead, you should climb the walls on either side of it to find a good position from which you can shoot the links. When you climb the walls, Hunwald and Aelfgar should follow close behind. You’ll find a number of archers atop the walls, along with a Goliath elite unit. Take them out and then shoot the links to lower the bridge. When you walk over it, a brief cutscene will begin, after which you’ll need to enter the church to confront Herefrith.
Enter the Church and Confront Herefrith¶
You won’t be able to enter the church by any means from its own doors or windows. Instead, you’ll need to enter the small chapel located just north of the church, with a weak wooden barricade blocking the entrance. Destroy this and then climb down the hole to the depths of the church. Take the key and continue south until you come across another set of ladders. Once you climb them you’ll find Herefrith instructing his soldiers to fight on. Kill Herefrith where he stands (he is incredibly weak so this should only take a couple of regular hits at most), and then finish off the soldiers.
When all the enemies within the church are dead, approach Herefrith to confirm the kill, which will initiate a cutscene with him. After this, you’ll need to speak with Hunwald or Aelfgar just north of the church to complete the quest.
