Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Poco Path - Catching Pokémon

By
Vincent Lau

This is a guide for Poco Path, near the beginning of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. Here, you’ll get to catch your first Pokémon!

(1 of 2) If there were numbered routes, this’d be Route 1.

As you enter Poco Path, Nemona will teach you about catching Pokémon. Rather than showing you herself, you’ll get some hands on practice!

You’ll be thrown into a battle with a Level 3 Lechonk. Use your damaging moves to weaken the Lechonk until it has under half HP. The lower, the better, but don’t KO it. Once Lechonk is weak, press Joy-Con-ButtonX and select a "Poké Ball" iconPoké Ball. With luck, the Lechonk should stay in the ball.

Afterwards, you’ll receive an extra 10 Poké Balls from Nemona.

Now you’re free to wander around and catch Pokémon!

(1 of 2) Besides bumping into Pokémon, you can throw your Pokémon straight at them.

To catch a Pokémon, you first need to battle them. You can do so by touching them on the field. Or you can press Joy-Con-ZR when near and facing them to throw your Pokémon at them, to trigger a battle that way. This is the only way to battle Pokémon in the air.

Additionally, if you throw a Pokémon at a wild Pokémon when they’re facing away from you, they’ll be stunned during the first turn of battle.

Your goal is the lighthouse towards the north-east. Simply follow the path to reach it.

However, we recommend spending a bit of time catching some of the Pokémon here–of which there are many! There are also lots of item balls (shaped like Poké Balls) dotted around, containing items.

(1 of 2) When you reach around here, a story event will occur.

When you’re halfway to the lighthouse, near Inlet Grotto, Nemona will catch up to you. Suddenly, a loud noise will come from the direction of Inlet Grotto. Just past where Nemona is standing, head towards the narrow side path, through the gap in the fence.

You’ll spot the source of the noise all the way down and accidentally slip. Thankfully, the power of technology saves you from certain death. Approach the collapsed Pokémon by the water. When it regains its strength, follow it inside Inlet Grotto.
