This page offers a guide on how to beat Gym Leader Katy in the Bug Gym in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. We will cover what Pokémon to bring and what Pokémon Katy will use.
The Bug Gym is likely the first gym you’ll want to take on as you’ll be battling against Level 14-15 Pokémon. The gym can be found in Cortondo. Cortondo is found directly west of Mesagoza. Just head out of the west gate of the city and follow the path until you reach Cortondo!
Recommended Pokémon for Fighting Gym Leader Katy¶
Your Pokémon team should ideally be Level 14 or higher for this battle.
Since you’re fighting at the Bug Gym, you’ll want to make-up a team of Pokémon that do well against Bug-types. Rock , Flying and Fire Pokémon are all good options because they’ll do x2 damage (super effective).
If you’ve got the fire starter, Fuecoco, you should speed through this gym! Here’s some other recommended Pokémon that can be found on the way to the Bug Gym:
- Starly - A Normal and Flying-type Pokémon found near the South Province (Area Two) Pokémon Center.
- Fletchling - Another Normal and Flying-type Pokémon found near Cortondo (East) Pokémon Center.
- Diglett with Rock tera-type (random occurrence) - On two separate occasions we found a wild Rock tera-type hanging around the entrance (look for the super shiny Diglett). A Rock tera-type Diglett will know Rock Tomb, which is a great rock-type move to use in this gym! It’ll also be around level 17 so perfect for this gym!
If you are picking up Pokémon from right outside Cortondo, make sure you level them up first as they’ll probably be a few levels lower than the recommended Gym level!
Try to avoid bringing out Pokémon that are weak to Bug-type Pokémon, such as Grass , Psychic and Dark types. That means if you chose the grass starter, Sprigatito, you’ll probably want to keep it out of this fight!
Gym Leader Katy’s Pokémon¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Nymble | 14 | Bug |
Tarountula | 14 | Bug |
Teddiursa | 15 | Normal (Normal) with Bug tera-type. |
Nymble¶
Nymble is a common Bug-type Pokémon that you shouldn’t have many problems against if you’ve got a couple of Pokémon that have Rock, Fire or Flying-type moves! Nymble does have the move, Struggle Bug, which can lower its opponent’s Sp. Attack but this shouldn’t pose too much of a threat!
Tarountula¶
The next Pokémon in Katy’s repertoire is Tarountula. Again, if you have a good match-up to bug types this guy won’t be a bother either.
Terastallized Teddiursa¶
When Katy brings out Teddiursa, she will immediately terastallize it, revealing it to have a Bug tera-type which is in keeping with the Bug theme - a Normal-type Teddiursa would certainly be out of place here! Teddiursa will use the bug move, Fury Cutter, which will be stronger than usual because he’s in his Bug tera form.
If you have Pokémon that do x2 damage against bug-types then you’ll do super effective damage against the Teddiursa because of his bug tera type.
Once you’ve defeated Teddiursa, you’ll earn the Bug Gym Badge! You can now catch Level 25 Pokémon more easily and they’ll also listen to you in battles. In addition, Katy will also give you TM021 Pounce.
