This is a guide for defeating Brassius, the Grass Gym Leader, during his rematch in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.
How to Rematch Brassius¶
You can rematch Brassius after completing the Area Zero story (after seeing the credits roll) and visiting the Director’s Office at Naranja/Uva Academy. Geeta will ask you to visit the eight gyms of Paldea in her place, as part of an inspection. During this time, you can challenge the gym leaders at their full power!
Recommended Pokémon for Brassius During His Rematch¶
Brassius is still a Grass type expert, so we recommend bringing Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison and Bug types.
His Pokémon are all Level 65-66, so your Pokémon should be Level 65+ to match.
If you’re looking for some artistic inspiration, here are some ideas:
- The Level 75 Tera Dragonite at the far eastern edge of Paldea. High Level with exceptional Attack. You can use its Hurricane or relearn Wing Attack, which is weaker, but more accurate and runs off Dragonite’s superior Attack stat.
- Chi-Yu, a Legendary Pokémon that’s Dark and Fire type, located in one of the sealed shrines.
- Chien-Pao, a Dark and Ice Legendary, also found in one of the sealed shrines.
- Volcarona, a Bug and Fire type found in Area Zero.
- Venomoth, a Bug and Poison type found in Area Zero. Not super strong, but a decent back up option if you’re lazy.
What Pokémon does Brassius Use During His Rematch?¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Lilligant | 65 | Grass |
Breloom | 65 | Grass Fighting |
Tsareena | 65 | Grass |
Arboliva | 65 | Grass Normal |
Sudowoodo | 66 | Rock (Tera Type: Grass ) |
Lilligant¶
Brassius has evolved his Petilil into a more capable Pokémon. His Lilligant can use Petal Blizzard for Grass STAB (although it’s a physical move and Lilligant has poor Attack), Hyper Beam for big damage but requires recharging afterwards, Light Screen to weaken your special moves and Quiver Dance to boost its Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed stats.
It’s a shame; if Lilligant was carry a special Grass move like Energy Ball, it would be kind of scary with Quiver Dance. Instead, Quiver Dance only boosts Hyper Beam, which can be damaging but has a big drawback. Crush it with Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison or Bug types, especially physical attackers in case it sets up Light Screen.
Breloom¶
Breloom is a new addition to Brassius’s team. It’s carrying Seed Bomb for Grass STAB, Mach Punch for Fighting STAB and increased priority, Thunder Punch to annoy Flying types and Spore for 100% accurate sleep. Its Effect Spore ability has a low chance of conferring a status ailment if a move makes contact.
Spore is probably the most annoying thing here, especially if Breloom outspeeds your Pokémon. If necessary, you could hold a Chesto Berry or Lum Berry to cure sleep. Despite Breloom carrying Thunder Punch, Flying types are recommended for the quadruple damage. Fire, Poison, Psychic and Fairy types should also do well.
Tsareena¶
Tsareena is another new face. This one can use Trop Kick for Grass STAB and to lower your Attack, High Jump Kick to punch through Ice types (but will hurt Tsareena if it misses), Zen Headbutt to mess up Poison types and Play Rough to mess with Dragon types etc. Its Queenly Majesty ability also negates priority moves like Quick Attack.
We suggest fielding a Fire, Flying or Bug type. Maybe a special attacker, if you’re concerned about Trop Kick (and if Light Screen isn’t active).
Arboliva¶
Brassius has evolved his Smoliv as well. It can use Energy Ball for STAB, Leech Seed to slowly steal HP from your Pokémon, Grassy Terrain to create a terrain effect that restores HP to all Pokémon touching the ground, while boosting their Grass moves, and Terrain Pulse to deal impressive Grass damage when Grassy Terrain is active. Its Seed Sower ability also generates Grassy Terrain when hit by an attack.
Arboliva isn’t too deadly since it’s slow. However, between Grassy Terrain and Seed Sower, it’s nigh guaranteed to create Grassy Terrain, which will probably benefit Brassius more than you. If Arboliva also uses Leech Seed, it can heal a lot from Grassy Terrain and Leech Seed! So aim to finish it quickly with super-effective Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison or Bug moves.
Terastallized Sudowoodo¶
Like in his initial fight, Brassius will Terastallize his Sudowoodo so it becomes a Grass type. For attacks, it can use Trailblaze for Grass STAB and to boost its own Speed, Stone Edge for Rock STAB and to counter Fire, Ice, Flying and Bug types, plus Fire Punch and Ice Punch for additional coverage. Its Sturdy ability also prevents OHKOs.
Only Poison types are safe, but Sudowoodo has never really been the scariest Pokémon, even if it’s all shimmery and crystal-like. Mainly because it’s super slow, even with Trailblaze.
