Want to find out how to beat Great Tusk, the Quaking Earth Titan in Pokémon Scarlet? We have details on where to find it, what Pokémon we recommend you bring along and ultimately, how to beat Great Tusk, the Quaking Earth Titan.
Where to Find the Quaking Earth Titan (Scarlet)¶
Before learning how to beat Great Tusk, the Quaking Earth Titan, we need to find it. Great Tusk can be found roaming the west side of Asado Desert, between West Province (Area One) and West Province (Area Two). Also west from Cascarrafa, where the Water gym is. It’s incredibly hard to miss Great Tusk when you’re nearby, because it’s absolutely gigantic.
How to Beat Great Tusk, the Quaking Earth Titan¶
Best Way to Reach the Quaking Earth Titan¶
We recommend heading to Cascarrafa to kick off learning how to beat Great Tusk, if you haven’t done so already. This water-themed town is located north from Cortondo, where the Grass Gym is; you can head west from Mesagoza to reach Cortondo.
From Cortondo, travel north-west until you go past the bridge across the river. West from here is a Pokémon Center that acts as a pit stop. Continue west a short distance, then follow the road north, then north-east after the next bridge. Halfway towards Cascarrafa, there’s another PMC. After that is Cascarrafa itself.
When you’re at Cascarrafa, the Asado Desert is directly west from the town. Make your way west through the desert and you’ll find your destination easily.
How to beat Great Tusk, the Quaking Earth Titan: Best Pokémon¶
Ideally, you should start to learn how to beat Great Tusk, the Quaking Earth Titan when your Pokémon are at least Level 45. Great Tusk is a Paradox (ancient) Donphan that’s a Ground and Fighting type.
Offensively, the best Pokémon to use are Water , Grass , Flying , Psychic and Fairy .
Defensively, Fairy is the best, when considering what moves Great Tusk can use. Avoid Psychic unless they take neutral damage from Dark (eg. if they’re part Fighting, Dark or Fairy).
If you picked Quaxly, they’ll be great here, when fully evolved. Meanwhile if you fully evolved Sprigatito, exercise caution because they’re weak to Fighting .
Other Pokémon you could consider:
- Gyarados (Water and Flying ), which you can evolve from Magikarp, commonly found in rivers everywhere.
- Azumarill (Water and Fairy ), evolved from Azurill, found around south Paldea. Or caught around north-west Paldea.
- Scovillain (Grass and Fire ), evolved from Capsakid, found around Asado Desert. Or you could catch one around south-west or north-east Paldea, etc.
- Lilligant (Grass ), evolved from Petilil, found near south-west Paldea or the far west, below Asado Desert.
- Dachsbund (Fairy ), evolved from Fidough, found near Los Platos etc. Or caught from south-west Paldea or north-east from Asado Desert.
- The Tinkatink line (Fairy and Steel ). Tintatink is found near ruins (one south-west from the Dark Crew base, another north-east from Cortondo). Tinkatuff is also found near ruins (try north-east Paldea or the area just above the massive, central crater).
Best Strategies for the Quaking Earth Titan (Scarlet)¶
You’ll end up fighting Great Tusk twice whilst finding out how to beat Great Tusk, although there’s a brief pause in-between the two fights, if you need to rest etc.
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Great Tusk | 44 | Ground Fighting |
Great Tusk resembles a prehistoric version of Donphan. Its Attack and Defense are high, but its special-based stats are poor.
For attacks, Great Tusk can use Rapid Spin, which used to be a real weak Normal-type move. Now it does decent damage and boosts the user’s Speed, on top of its usual effects: dispelling moves like Leech Seed and Wrap.
Also, watch out for Brick Break, a Fighting-type move that shatters protection from Reflect and Light Screen.
At this point, a Ghost-type would’ve been ideal, since they’re immune to Rapid Spin and Brick Break. Sadly, Great Tusk can use Knock Off, a Dark-type move that removes your Pokémon’s held item (and if does remove your item, deals increased damage).
Strangely, Great Tusk does not seem to know any Ground-type moves, just those three. So any Pokémon weak to Ground may have a fighting chance.
As mentioned above, Water , Grass , Flying and Psychic Pokémon are great for dealing damage. However, they can potentially get worn down by Great Tusk’s merciless onslaught. Psychic-types may also take super-effective damage from Knock Off.
Fairy types are super-effective too, while also resisting Brick Break and Knock Off. Rapid Spin will still hurt, but you can’t have everything! The Tinkatink line can resist Rapid Spin too, but takes neutral damage from Brick Break.
Although Great Tusk can be intimidating, there are two things you can try whilst learning how to beat Great Tusk, the Quaking Earth Titan:
One, Great Tusk only uses physical attacks and has no way to boost its Attack. As such, you can massively impair it by using moves that lower Attack, such as Growl. Better yet Baby-Doll Eyes, if Great Tusk is faster than your Pokémon (can happen if it spams Rapid Spin). You could also repeatedly switch in and out Pokémon with the Intimidate ability.
Keep in mind critical hits from Great Tusk will ignore Attack drops, but unless you’re unlucky, it shouldn’t happen too often.
Two, unlike Iron Treads in Pokémon Violet, Great Tusk is susceptible to poison. When poisoned, it will lose a large chunk of health each turn. You could then spam healing items or Protect (learned from TM) while Great Tusk succumbs to poison damage. Poison can be applied using moves like Poison Powder or Toxic. Or you could gamble on Poison Point from Clodsire, for instance.
Round 2¶
After learning how to defeat Great Tusk and defeating the Quaking Earth Titan, it will retreat. When you catch up with it, you’ll fight it again, but stronger. However, Arven will lend a hand with his own Pokémon:
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Scovillain | 44 | Grass Fire |
As far as we can tell, Great Tusk fights exactly the same as before, but is slightly stronger. However, Arven’s Scovillain should make the fight go down faster with its super-effective Razor Leaf.
After the Battle¶
Triumph against the Quaking Earth Titan and Arven will obtain the Sour Herba Mystica. Your travel buddy–Koraidon or Miraidon–will steal one of your Herba Mystica sandwiches and obtain the Glide ability.
How to Use the Glide Ability¶
When riding Koraidon or Miraidon, press while in the air to begin gliding. You can do so after jumping or when you’re falling. Press again while gliding to stop gliding.
