Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

How to Beat Tyranitar in the Tera Raid Event

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

A guide on how to beat "Tyranitar" IconTyranitar during the limited time tera raid event in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet running from midnight UTC on December 9th through to 23:59 UTC on December 11th 2022.

During this event, Tyranitar will appear in Scarlet games whilst "Salamence" IconSalamence will appear in Violet. You will encounter these Pokémon during 4 and 5 star tera raids. If you’d like to battle Salamence or Tyranitar but you don’t have the right version, you can go online and battle with other people who do have the right game version!

Tyranitar Tera Type

Tyranitar is a Rock Rock and Dark Dark type Pokémon. If you take on Tyranitar during a 4-star raid, its tera type will be random. If you battle Tyranitar during a 5-star raid, it’ll have a 50% chance of either being a Ghost type or a random tera type.

If it does take on the Ghost tera type, then a strong Dark or Ghost type Pokémon will do x2 damage. For example our Gholdengo tera raid build would work well here!

Naturally, given that the tera type can be random, it’ll be good to be prepared to pull out different Pokémon to deal extra damage to its tera type. Also, try to avoid bringing out Pokémon that might be weak to the following moves listed below.

Tyranitar 4-Star Raid Moveset

Move Type Category Power Accuracy PP
"Earthquake" iconEarthquake Ground Physical 100 100 10
"Stone Edge" iconStone Edge Rock Physical 100 80 5
Bite Dark Physical 60 100 25
"Dragon Claw" iconDragon Claw Dragon Physical 80 100 15

Any strong Fighting type would to well here (for the most part), because Ground and Dragon moves do normal damage and Rock and Dark do x0.5 damage. Iron Hands, for example, would be a decent opponent.

Tyranitar 5-Star Raid Moveset

Move Type Category Power Accuracy PP
"Earthquake" iconEarthquake Ground Physical 100 100 10
"Stone Edge" iconStone Edge Rock Physical 100 80 5
"Crunch" iconCrunch Dark Physical 80 100 15
"Ice Punch" iconIce Punch Ice Physical 75 100 15

The Dragonclaw is exchanged for "Ice Punch" iconIce Punch and Bite is swapped out for the stronger Dark type move, "Crunch" iconCrunch. Iron Hands would still do decently here given that Ice moves still do normal damage.
