Throughout the vast majority of your first playthrough, legendary gear will be the currency of power, as the higher stats and legendary mods this equipment possesses greatly affects the potency of your build. Once you unlock World Tier 3, however, you’ll gain access to a new, higher tier of loot - the unique. This page will discuss unique drops in Diablo 4, including what unique items do, where to farm for unique drops and how unique gear is different from legendary gear.
What is Unique Gear in Diablo 4?¶
Unique gear is (currently) the highest rarity tier of equipment in Diablo 4, and at a glance it’s statistically similar to legendary gear. Both have roughly the same number of stats (usually four) and stat ranges, and both have a legendary/unique mod. The biggest difference is that unique items are hand-crafted, and while the values of their stats may change, the stats themselves are static, and, usually, somewhat focused on satisfying some build or at least providing flavor. For example, the Staff of Endless Rage always has a stat that boosts Core Damage, but the amount by which it does may vary as appropriate for an item of its type and level. Each item’s unique mod is also, well, unique, whereas legendary mods are completely random.
When you see a unique item drop, you should have a pretty good idea of what it is, assuming you know what sort of uniques are out there. It’s possible to get bad rolls on a unique item that can limit their effectiveness somewhat (albeit inasmuch as it’s possible to simply get a better version of the same unique), and it’s possible to get uniques that don’t really suit your build, but you won’t have an otherwise promising unique ruined by getting a bunch of stats randomly rolled you don’t want.
As a bit of a downside, unique items aren’t as fungible as legendary items - you cannot swap out stats on unique items, nor can you salvage or supplant unique mods.
Some unique items are likely going to the best-in-slot items for any particular build, as they can possess mods that can’t be found anywhere else, while legendary mods can appear on a variety of different items. That said, there are probably only going to be a handful of excellent uniques for any particular build/class, so you’re still going to want to keep standout legendary gear in the rotation.
Where to Find Unique Items in Diablo 4¶
Unique items can technically be found just about anywhere, from any source, as long as the game difficulty is set to World Tier 3 (Nightmare). The best place to hunt for them, however, is within Nightmare Dungeons](https://www.gamerguides.com/diablo-iv/guide/world-tiers/nightmare-difficulty/nightmare-dungeons-explained-in-diablo-4) - the higher the difficulty tier of the Nightmare Sigil used to create the Nightmare Dungeon, the better. Just keep in mind that unique items are quite rare - you’ll likely find dozens of legendary items for each unique, so if you don’t see any drop for a while, well, that’s the end game grind. It’s supposed to take a while.
