At the end of the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon you’ll encounter Elias, Remnant of Hatred, the boss of the aforementioned dungeon and, by extension, the guardian of World Tier 4 (Torment difficulty). This page will provide strategies and tips for defeating Elias, Remnant of Hatred in Diablo 4.
Elias, Hatred’s Remnant Fight Preparations¶
You’ll find Elias, Hatred’s Remnant, in the depths of the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon, which can be found along the eastern edge of the Chambatar Ridge subregion in the Dry Steppes. Clearing most of this Capstone Dungeon isn’t terribly difficult, even for characters who are below the recommended level 70, with the first real challenges being the Elite cannibals you have to fight during the Collect Animus from the Cannibals phase of the dungeon. Elias is another matter, however, being the real barrier to entry for World Tier 4. To make this fight easier, consider the following preparations:
-
You’ll want to be as close to level 70 as possible, as this will, at the very least, give you a larger Life pool to work with. The jump in survivability between level 60 and level 70 is quite significant, even without any gear/Paragon upgrade.
-
Stack as much fire resistance as possible. Most of Elias’s attacks are fire-based. This probably isn’t worth swapping out gear for, but putting flawless rubies in your jewelry and quaffing an elixir that boosts fire resistance are both relatively easy alterations that can further improve your survivability.
-
Ensure that you’re equipped with fully upgraded, Sacred-tier Legendary or Unique gear whose mods enhance your build and synergize with each other. The damage/armor/stat boosts from upgrading one bit of gear aren’t significant, but getting all your gear to 4/4 or 5/5 upgrades makes a pretty big difference.
With these preparations made, clear a path through the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon and open the way to Elias.
Elias, Hatred’s Remnant Strategy¶
Like most bosses, Elias, Hatred’s Remnant is split into multiple phases, as indicated by the triangles segmenting his life bar. In this case, Elias has five segments, although he doesn’t typically add much in the way of new attacks as his life bar depletes, rather he just starts shooting more fire bolts and attacks more frequently. As mentioned above, having good fire resistance will help mitigate any chip damage he deals with the odd, unlucky fire bolt. While his fire bolts are survivable (provided you don’t catch several with your face in quick succession) some of his other attacks are more devastating, and in general, you’re probably better off starting the fight slow, working on building up Elias’s stagger meter, and trying to deal as much damage in a single stun session. With luck and preparation, you’ll be able to finish him off after a single stagger period.
His attacks are as follows:
-
Fire Bolt Wave: Elias will surround himself with slow-moving fire bolts before projecting them forward with great speed and force. The further away you are from this, the better, as the fire bolts will fan out as they travel, leaving gaps you can just stand between.
-
Fire Bolt Barrage: Elias’s main attack, he’ll wave his staff in the air and conjure several fire bolts, which he then shoots in quick succession. Strafing is sufficient to avoid this, but you do need to be wary, as he’ll use this multiple times in a row and will add more fire bolts to each barrage as his life depletes.
-
Fire Bolt Flurry: The least predictable of Elias’s firebolt attacks, he’ll emit an array of fire bolts that lazily swarm around him before expelling them with great velocity in various directions. This is his most dangerous fire bolt attack, as it deals heavy damage like Fire Bolt Wave, but since the fire bolts are launched in succession there’s a higher potential that you’ll be hit by more than one bolt. Keep your distance so the gaps between bolts will be wider and you’ll have more time to react to them.
-
Wave of Flames: A large, fan-shaped marker will appear on the ground in the direction Elias is facing, and after a moment of casting, a wave of flame will erupt from Elias and spread down the marked area. Just stay off the marked area to avoid damage - being further away gives you more time to dodge. It’s also worth noting that this attack usually doesn’t reach the edges of the arena. In later phases of the fight, Elias will string two or even three of these attacks together.
-
Summon Demons: Elias will hold up his hand and scatter motes of blood, creating numerous circular reticles on the floor. Avoid these spots, as this is where enemies will be summoned (Spawn of the Damned or Succubi), but worse, the demons will appear in an eruption of blood. This attack can easily one-shot weaker characters, and you need to stand in the gaps between the summoning circles to avoid damage. Even if you avoid the damage from the summoning, you’ll still have to deal with the summoned demons, which, to be fair, are mostly a way to get supplemental potions rather than a legitimate threat on their own.
-
Greater Summoning: Why have one summoning spell when you can have two? This attack is actually less dangerous as it’s easier to dodge and deals damage over time rather than instant-death explosions with small gaps between them, like the other summoning spell. Elias will create a pattern on the floor - either a triangle or a pentagram - and the pattern will burst into flames before Oppressors appear at each corner. The shape determines the number of Oppressors summoned, three for the triangle, and five for the pentagram. The flames deal damage if you stray onto them and persist for a while, which makes it much more difficult to evade Elias’s follow-up attacks. Also, unlike the pests summoned by the other summoning ritual, Oppressors can actually be dangerous due to their fire breath.
Defeating Elias will complete the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon and allow you to switch to World Tier 4 (Torment difficulty) via the World Tier statue in Kyovashad.
