The barbarians of the Bear Tribe place considerable value on acts of martial prowess - a useful trait for itinerant people who often come into conflict on their trials. What better way to prove your worth than making such a display while also claiming the head of one of their most hated foes? This page provides a walkthrough for the side quest The Beast’s Challenge in Diablo 4.
How to Start The Beast’s Challenge in Diablo 4¶
You can start this side quest by talking to Greganoch along the western edge of the Bear Tribe Refuge, a bastion of civilization in the frozen heights of the Seat of the Heavens region. Talk to him and ask “Tell me of the trophies behind you”, and he’ll tell you that, as impressive as their collection of grisly war trophies is, one spot remains conspicuously empty - a spot reserved for the head of Kauller the Collector. This massive Khazra not only feasts on the flesh of defeated Bear Tribe warriors, but it has openly issued a challenge to them, one the Bear Tribe has apparently not been able to answer. Bringing back this beast’s head would earn you favor with the tribe.
How to Find and Kill Kauller the Collector in Diablo 4¶
After talking with Greganoch the area north of the Bear Tribe Refuge - pretty much the entire northwestern edge of the Seat of the Heavens Region, in fact - will be circled by a blue search area. Head up there, past the Hoarfrost Demise dungeon, and you should find Kauller just northwest of said dungeon.
Kauller the Collector is a massive Khazra Brute, but he’s not unique, like the Khazra Abomination is. That said, don’t let your guard down, as he’s still unique and can spawn with a variety of traits (at Lv25 he had three such traits - Summoner, Vampiric and Cold Enchanted). Summoner just allowed him to call minions to come die for him, but Vampiric and Cold Enchanted were more dangerous, as the former caused Kauller to heal when dealing physical damage, and Cold Enchanted allowed him to inflict cold damage and conjured orbs of frozen energy. He can’t leech your life if he can’t hit you, but his range is impressive due to his size, and if he freezes you he’ll get a few free shots in, which is counterproductive, to say the least.
Keep your distance if possible, and failing that, at least be wary of the ice orbs he spawns and move off them to avoid being frozen. He’s not incredibly durable, and he’s susceptible to various debuffs (ironically including being frozen), which will let you punish Kauller without fear of reprisal. Wear him down and when he dies be sure to pick up the Head of Kauller and return to Greganoch in the Bear Tribe Refuge. Inform him “I’ve returned with the Head of Kauller” and he’ll congratulate you before asking you to mount it. Head to the vile totem behind Greganoch and when prompted Mount the Beast’s Head to complete the quest, earning your standard reward of a Cache and a variable amount of XP and gold.
