Of all the tasks you can complete to earn the trust and goodwill of the Bear Tribe, none are perhaps more important than the recovery of a fabled weapon. All the better if you have to kill many of the tribe’s enemies and avenge the demise of their slain champion while you’re at it. This page will cover the side quest Hammer of the Champion in Diablo 4.
How to Start Hammer of the Champions in Diablo 4¶
Another quest located at the Bear Tribe Refuge, in the Seat of the Heavens region. Talk to Greganoch along the western edge of camp and he’ll tell you that their chieftain’s champion, Baltok, was slain and worse, his fabled weapon, Grizzly’s Maul, was lost with him. Needless to say, it’s a grave insult that the khazra who slew their champion now possess such a trophy, an insult the Bear Tribe are apparently incapable of responding to.
While this starts the quest Hammer of the Champion, there’s a lot of work you have to do before you can actually make any progress. The majority of this quest takes place in the [Rimescar Cavern] dungeon, which in turn cannot be accessed until you clear the Malnok Stronghold - not an insignificant undertaking in its own right. Conquer Malnok and you can enter the Rimescar Cavern along the northeastern edge of what used to be the stronghold.
How to find Grizzly’s Maul in Rimescar Cavern¶
Once you’re in the dungeon, you’ll have to advance into the “Uncharted Depths” to find Grizzly’s Maul, which means clearing some of this dungeon’s objectives. First up, you’ll need to Destroy the Sacrificial Flesh: 3, vile totems that are similar to effigies you may have had to destroy if you attempted any Raze the Effigies events. These ones don’t directly attack, but they will summon Khazra to deter vandalism, and when destroyed they’ll spawn a random elite khazra. Work your way through the dungeon and destroy all three of these totems and you’ll be tasked with the next objective: Travel to the Uncharted Depths. En route to these “Uncharted Depths” we were ambushed, which kicked off yet another objective: Survive the enemy attack: 30 seconds, after which we were finally able to reach the ladder taking us down to the “Uncharted Depths”.
Grizzly’s Maul is in this part of the dungeon; as you explore, look out for an impaled corpse - Impaled Champion Baltok and interact with the grisly trophy to unearth Grizzly’s Maul. At this point you’re pretty much done with this side quest - you can continue to the end of the dungeon by Destroying the Ice Barrier, then Defeating the Khazra Abomination, who fights identically to the specimen you may have encountered in the Hoarfrost Demise dungeon - for a full walkthrough for the Khazra Abomination boss, check out the linked page.
Defeating the Khazra Abomination will complete this dungeon and earn you the Aspect of Plunging Darkness.
When you’re ready to finish this side quest, return to Greganoch in the Bear Tribe Refuge and inform him that “I have returned with Grizzly’s Maul”. In addition to the standard side quest rewards of XP and Gold, he’ll also tell you that Grizzly’s Maul needs a new owner, and who better than the person who liberated it from the clutches of the khazra? Grizzly’s Maul is a rare, unique two-handed mace.
