The Diablo 4 Season 1 quest, Holding Back the Flood, is a quest that requires you to complete chapters 1 and 2 of your season journey. Here players are given plenty of tasks to take part in and will have lots of content to do. To make this process go quicker, we intend to give you a Holding Back the Flood Walkthrough for Diablo 4 Season 1.
Diablo 4 Holding Back the Flood Season 1 Walkthrough¶
The thing you need to know about the Diablo 4 Holding Back the Flood quest is that you won’t get a map marker to complete it. Instead, you must open the Battle Pass menu on your chosen device. From there, you will find a Journey button, which will take you to a book with chapters, each containing objectives for you to do.
When you are on a specific chapter, you need to do a minimum of objectives before advancing further into the Journey chapters. Upon doing so, you will get a fair few rewards, including some aspects, hearts, a cache of goodies, season pass progression and more. For chapter 1, it is seven, and for chapter 2, you need to complete nine.
To fast-track through these objectives, we recommend doing the following objectives in each chapter. But, remember you want to hit them all at some point anyway, as each one grants Favor, which will progress your pass.
Chapter 1 of Holding Back the Flood¶
Objective | Description |
---|---|
Heart of Corruption | Collect a Malignant Heart |
Den of Evil | Complete any Dungeon found on your Map |
What Lurks Below | Complete a Cellar |
Keeper of the Keys | Collect a Whispering Key (20 Obols from the Purveyor in all major cities) |
Waste Not | Salvage 10 Normal Items at the Blacksmith |
Trouble in the Wilds | Compete a World event |
The Hangman’s Garden | Collect 15 Gallowsvine |
These are all simple enough tasks. If you skipped the campaign, you get the Malignant Heart without even thinking. Meanwhile, you will want to complete a dungeon, so that you start ticking away at Codex of Power aspects for your build. The world event, Gallowvine, Cellar and Whispering Key can all be done casually, as you travel around the map. Gallwovine is very common in all regions, and you can find these as you pick up waypoints you need to unlock. While traveling, you will likely find an event, so you can complete it, then spend the obols on the key. Lastly, you have the Blacksmith. While low level, you will get plenty of white quality items, so it’s easy to dismantle for the ten you need.
For those who didn’t skip the campaign, you can do the three dungeons in Fractured Peaks instead as our alternative, as you will be there till around level 20 anyway, offering plenty of time to do three dungeons.
Chapter 2 of Holding Back the Flood¶
Objective | Description |
---|---|
Stopping The Spread | Collect 3 Malignant Hearts |
Undertaker | Complete 10 Cellars |
Ruins Reclaimed | Complete a Stronghold |
Gemcutter | Craft any Chipped Gem at the Jeweler |
A Warrior of Taste | Change gear appearance 5 times at the wardrobe |
Lighting the Way | Collect 10 Waypoints |
Baptized in Blood | Reach Level 25 |
Spit and Polish | Upgrade items twice at the Blacksmith or Jeweler |
Finer Clarity | Upgrade your Potion to Minor at the Alchemist |
Most of the recommendations are fairly simple to do. At around level 10-25, you will start getting gems, and enough resources to begin easily upgrading items. So, these are easy passive milestones you will get without thinking about it. Some of the more easier ones to do is to change appearance, which you can easily do at an inn anytime you go back to a major city
The only ones you have to go out of your way for are the Waypoints, which you should already be nearing completion if you went looking for things in Chapter 1. Not to mention it makes traveling much easier later in the game. Also, you can easily find Cellars this way as you collect Waypoints, making that challenge much easier to complete passively. If you want help planning a route, we recommend taking a look at our interactive Diablo 4 map. Here you can toggle only Waypoints and Cellars by selecting the Exploration and Waypoints buttons and follow a route to your liking.
When you get to level 15, you can start doing Strongholds. Malnok is a good one, as that is only level 15 minimum, and has a few elites, and not-so-tedious bosses, either. So, that one can be easily completed in the Fractured Peaks.
By the time you’re level 25, you should have completed Chapter 2 of your season journey. This is because you’ll tick the level 25 one by default, and likely have upgraded your level 20 potion too. This will then complete the Diablo 4 Holding Back The Flood Quest, allowing you to progress the season storyline once again.
