Recycling bosses is nothing new in the Diablo franchise, but Duriel has a distinct honor - he’s not only appeared in both Diablo 2 and Diablo 4 as a story boss, but he also has more powerful variants in both games - Uber Duriel and Duriel, Maggot King, respectively. Unfortunately for fans of the Maggot King (those exist, right?), he’s also one of the more difficult bosses to encounter in Diablo 4, requiring two unique components that will require you to defeat other world bosses and brave the Helltide. This page will provide information on how to summon Duriel, Maggot King in Diablo 4, including information on acquiring Mucus-Slick Eggs and Shards of Agony, tips on how to defeat Duriel, Maggot King, and what unique gear Duriel can drop.
How to Summon Duriel, Maggot King in Diablo 4¶
Most World Bosses outside of the three who randomly spawn across Sanctuary - Ashava, Avarice the Gold-Cursed and Wandering Death require specific materials in order to fight them. Duriel is a bit more tedious, as the materials you need to summon him can only be found by defeating both Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint and the Echo of Varshan, who will drop Shards of Agony and Mucus-Slick Eggs, respectively. Once you have these two objects (two of each), you’ll need to travel to the Gaping Crevasse along the southern edge of the Southern Expanse in Kehjistan. It’s a Lv100 dungeon that can only be accessed in World Tier 4, so you’ll want to be exceptionally high-leveled before you attempt to defeat Duriel, Maggot King - if you have any serious problems with Grigoire or the Echo of Varshan (both of which are Lv75 in World Tier IV), you’re probably not going to have a good time fighting Duriel, Maggot King.
Where To Find Shards of Agony in Diablo 4¶
Shards of Agony are materials dropped by Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint, but only in World Tier IV, and only for the character who summoned Grigoire. To summon Grigoire, you’ll need to travel to the Hall of the Penitent along the eastern edge of the Dindai Flats region in the Dry Steppes, fight through some trash mobs, and interact with a Light-Touched Altar, where you’ll need to sacrifice 5x Living Steel to call down Grigoire.
To farm Living Steel, you’ll need to participate in Helltide Events in World Tier 3. Specifically you’ll need to look out for Tortured Gift of Living Steel chests, which aren’t marked on your map, but are guarded by a massive demon called He-Grins-Wide-And-Waits, whose glowing red barrier will help you spot him, and the chest he guards. You’ll need 300 Aberrant Cinders to open the Tortured Gift of Living Steel chest, which takes a bit of farming to do, and you’ll need to defeat the aforementioned He-Grins-Wide-And-Waits to actually open the chest. Surmount these hurdles and you’ll get 1-2 Living Steel in World Tier III and 3 Living Steel in World Tier IV. Fortunately, the game doesn’t differentiate between Living Steel farmed in different difficulties, so any Living Steel you find in World Tier III can be saved up for World Tier IV if you prefer.
Where to Find Mucus-Slick Eggs in Diablo 4¶
Like Living Steel, the other component you’ll need to summon Duriel, Maggot King, can only be dropped by another world boss - the Echo of Varshan. Another chore of a boss to fight, you’ll need to find the various components required to summon it - Blackened Femurs, Gurgling Heads, Malignant Hearts and Trembling Hands - from various sources. One way to farm these is fairly straight-forward; complete Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers to earn reward caches, which will drop some of these components when opened. Alternatively, you can encounter Grotesque Debtors, but these appear randomly as you’re going about other business - defeating World Bosses, completing events, Legion Events or even as you complete Grim Favors. It’s RNG what parts you’ll get, and you’ll need one of each to fight the Echo of Varshan in World Tier IV, and since it’s largely RNG when Grotesque Debtors show up, we suggest just keeping busy by completing Grim Favors, Legion Events and World Bosses, as they show up (running Blood Harvests is also a fine way of collecting all kinds of resources.
Once you have the four aforementioned body parts, head to the Malignant Burrow near the Tree of Whispers (the northeastern corner of The Whispering Mire, Hawezar) and fight your way to the Malignant Altar. Make your offering to summon Varshan the Echo and defeat him in World Tier IV to get a Mucus-Slick Egg.
Duriel, Maggot King Boss Tips and Strategies¶
Now that you’ve done all the work harvesting 2x Shards of Agony and 2x Mucous-Slick Eggs, you merely have the trivial task of defeating one of the most powerful demons in the game. No sweat. Before you go after Duriel, Maggot King, make sure your poison resistance is maxed. No excuse to have it below 70%, really, just unsocket whatever is within your jewelry and toss in some Royal Emeralds. Duriel is a pestilential little maggot, and you won’t last long if you’re vulnerable to one of his key damage types. As for the massive physical damage Duriel deals… well, you’ll have to cope with the standard means of mitigating damage, which varies by class and build.
When you feel up to the challenge, travel to the Gaping Crevasse along the southern edge of the Southern and fight your way through the token resistances within to reach the Pestilent Altar, where you’ll need to sacrifice the aforementioned materials, which will summon… two Pangs of Duriel? These are just tasty-tastes of what lies ahead, and while they can pack a punch, they’re paper tigers - dispatch them and the real deal will show up.
Duriel, Maggot King recycles a lot of attacks used by the Duriel variant you encountered during the main questline, but his foul highness is much, much stronger. He’s got plenty of swipes and stabs with his scythe-like claws in his repertoire, and the obligatory balls of venom that he can spew about. These, of course, leave patches of AoE poison on the ground which should be avoided. Duriel can also summon maggots to fight for him, and if you’re standing where they spawn when they spawn, you’ll take some hefty damage. Otherwise, these just serve as a means of granting you extra potion drops and corpses. You may also see the Pangs of Duriel reappear, but they’re no more durable than the last time, mostly serving as distractions for their disgusting daddy. By far the most dangerous attack Duriel, Maggot King will use is a charge attack, and while not terribly fast, it can deal massive amounts of damage - potentially even one-shotting characters who are relatively sturdy. If you see Duriel and Maggot King rock back and forth repeatedly, it’s time to activate whatever evasive skills you have, preferably something like Blood Mist that negates incoming damage entirely. Failing that, run away and be ready to dodge - Duriel can turn on a dime just before he charges, so dodging through him while he gyrates is not a winning strategy. Keep up the pressure and avoid Duriel’s charge attack and you just may come out of this in one piece. Don’t be afraid to chug an elixir that boosts your max health, either - every little bit helps.
