Critical Strikes have long been a staple of role-playing games; you know how it works, depending on your weapon, character class and skills, your attacks may inflict extra damage. That’s no longer enough, however, and in Diablo 4 extra RNG effects come into play such as Overpower and Lucky Hit have been added to the mix. This page will cover Lucky Hits in Diablo 4, including what Lucky Hits do, how to trigger Lucky Hits, how to increase your Lucky Hit rate and how to see what each skill’s Lucky Hit rate is.
How Lucky Hits Work in Diablo 4?¶
Like Critical Strikes, Lucky Hits have a chance to randomly proc when using skills. Unlike Critical Strikes, Lucky Hits are more than mere damage boosters, and their effects vary wildly depending upon the skill(s) used and passives chosen. Most active skills (i.e. anything you actually have to assign to a hotkey and cast/use - all the square icons on your skill tree) have a variable Lucky Hit chance assigned to it, while some passive skills (always in effect - all the circular icons on your skill tree) add effects that proc via Lucky Hit rolls.
For example, the Spark basic skill has a base 9% Lucky Hit chance while Chain Lightning has a 25% Lucky Hit chance, and the Convulsions passive gives the player up to a 3% chance to Stun enemies for 3 seconds when using shock skills. Not all skills are created equally when it comes to proccing Lucky Hits, and you need to keep an eye on these innate Lucky Hit rates when choosing your skills, at least if you want Lucky Hits to be an important part of your build. You also need to be wary of how each skill functions - Frost Bolt has a base 40% Lucky Hit rate while Ice Shards only has a 16% Lucky Hit rate, but Ice Shards shoots multiple projectiles and with the right legendaries and debuffs can pierce and ricochet.
While skills are fairly set in stone regarding how well they proc Lucky Hits, there are things you can do to increase your base Lucky Hit chance. The most common way to boost Lucky Hit chance is simply finding gear that rolls Lucky Hit chance as a mod, which is somewhat common on weapons. You can also buy certain passive skills (like the Sorcerer’s Precision Magic passive, which gives up to a +15% boost to Lucky Hit chance), but all in all it’s not easy to boost Lucky Hit chance besides utilizing skills that play nice with them.
