Pets first appeared in the Diablo franchise in Diablo III, and for a live service game it’s little surprise - pets are easy digital tchotchkes to sell, with little in-game function, so it’s not surprising they’d end up in Diablo IV eventually. This page will discuss how pets function in Diablo IV, what they do, how to equip them, and what types of pets are currently available.
Page Breakdown¶
How Pets Work¶
Pets were added to the game with the launch of Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, and they mostly follow in the vein of the pets in Diablo III in that they’re mostly cosmetic. Small little critters that follow your toon around and brighten your day (and potentially compel you to attack them reflexively), their sole gameplay purpose is running around autonomously and picking up loot for you. The loot a pet will pick up is mostly confined to items that don’t actually consume an inventory slot - gold, gem fragments, and perhaps most useful of all, Aberrant Cinders. It’s not a huge boon by any stretch of the imagination, but it can be nice not having to run out of your way to pick up the odd bit of loot every now and again. Just make sure you’re not too far away and your pet will happily do its thing, safe from any enemy or hazard.
As of launch there are only several pets in the game, and they all function the same way, the differences being purely cosmetic. Not surprisingly, most of these new pets serve to incentivize some sort of purchase or another - Alkor is a preorder bonus for Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, Hratli is included with the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions of the game and Natalya is exclusive to the Ultimate Edition. Fortunately, if you keep your wallet sealed you’ll still get access to Asheara, so nobody is excluded from having a pet of some description. As of yet pets do not seem to be featured in the in-game store. A list of the game’s pets can be found below:

Unlocking Pets - Faithful Companion Quest¶
To equip a pet you’ll need to visit a Wardrobe and scroll over to the “Pets” tab, but you may first have to unlock your first pet by completing the tutorial quest Faithful Companion. You can find this quest along the northwestern edge of Kyovashad, where a “Well Behaved Dog” awaits. All you have to do is interact with this pooch and you’ll unlock the Asheara pet, ready to be equipped next time you visit a Wardrobe.
