When it comes to weapons in the Final Fantasy series, the Excalibur has been a mainstay since the very first game. It’s not the ultimate weapon this time around, but it’s still a very strong weapon for the stage of the game it’s available in. This page will tell you how to unlock the recipe and where to find the materials.
Where to Get the Excalibur Recipe in FF16¶
The first step to getting the Excalibur is to first find the design draft. By now, you might have realized that the more specialized equipment in FFXVI comes from completing specific Side Quests (marked with a +) and this is no different as you’ll need to complete a Quest to unlock it.
Before any of that, though, you’ll need to progress through the Main Quest until you reach the Out of the Shadows Quest. As the quest progresses, you’ll need to carry out a series of tasks for Mid. After completing those, you’ll find that Clive has had a number of missives delivered to his desk.
Check them and you’ll find one that will start the Blacksmith’s Blues II Quest, naturally, you will need to complete the previous quest, Blacksmith’s Blues before the follow-up is available. Once again, Blackthorne seems to be down and August wants your assistance in getting to the bottom of it.
Once you’ve completed the Quest (check out our guide above), return to Blackthorne and you’ll unlock the design draft for the Excalibur!
All Materials Needed for the Excalibur¶
As you may expect by a weapon of the Excalibur’s luster, you’ll need some rare materials in order to forge it, some of which you may already have. Below, you’ll find out where to find each and every material needed to craft the Excalibur (outside of Wyrrite, which you should have plenty of by now).
Grimalkin Hide¶
As with most of the remaining materials needed, you’ll need to defeat a Notorious Mark to get the Grimalkin Hide. Thankfully, the Grimalkin Hunt should already be available and is a rather simple one at this stage of the game. Once you locate them in Dhalmekia, the battle consists of multiple waves of regular enemies (that can be easily dealt with abilities such as Ignition) followed by the Grimalkin, a beast unlike some of the other large wolf battles you’ve fought.
Bomb Ember¶
The Bomb Ember is a bit more involving, as you’ll need to take down a Notorious Mark again only this time, you’ll need to trigger the Side Quest it belongs to first. This is the Weird Science Quest and it unlocks the same time as you gain access to these other Hunts (and is another + Quest).
You’ll soon learn you’ll need to find some !Bomb Ash and you’ll eventually be directed to the Hunt board that will direct you to The Crock in Sanbreque. Once you reach this open area, you’ll be forced into a battle against the Bomb King, a Hunt that isn’t overly tough, but can catch you out if you’re not careful.
Check out our guide on the Bomb King Hunt to learn how to get through the battle unscathed, you’ll obtain the Bomb Ember as a spoil from beating this foe.
Scarletite¶
The final rare material you’ll need to craft the Excalibur is a Scarletite, a material you may have seen before if you crafted the Drakeslayer armor earlier. Scarletite, fortunately, does come from a number of sources, as listed below:
Activity | Name | Location | Quantity |
---|---|---|---|
Hunt | Dozmare | Norvent Valley, near Lostwing Village (Caer Norvent River Gate Obelisk) | 1 |
Hunt | Fastitocalon | Northeast Velkroy Desert | 2 |
Hunt | The Ten of Clubs | Vamare (south central Field of Corava) | 1 |
Hunt | Holy Trumpitour | Cellar Passage (south of Lostwing) | 1 |
Side Quest | Hot Water | Dalimil Bathhouse, Drake’s Breath | 1 |
Excalibur Stats in FF16¶
Once you have all of the necessary materials, you can take them back to !Blackthrone and craft the Excalibur. This is by no means the best weapon in the game, but it’s strong for this part of it and will last you a while.
Name | Attack | Stagger |
