The Renown system in Final Fantasy XVI becomes available near the middle of the story, after completing The Gathering Storm main quest. You can increase your Renown by completing Main Quests, Side Quests, and Hunts (aka Notorious Marks), and you’ll earn new rewards as you reach different thresholds of Renown gain. We’ll explain how to unlock the Renown system and detail all the rewards on this page.
What Is Renown (Green Currency) In Final Fantasy XVI?¶
So, what exactly is Renown in FF16? You may know it as the green currency that you see as a quest reward, but it’s not explained much beyond that. We’ll go through all the details below. However, in a nutshell, it’s the currency you earn for completing side quests, Hunts, and some main quests, which you can then use to unlock specific tiered rewards.
Unlock The Patron’s Whisper at the Hideaway¶
The Renown system in Final Fantasy XVI really opens up after you complete The Gathering Storm main quest. At this point you’ll gain access to the new Hideaway hub, where The Patron’s Whisper, a kind of shop for Renown rewards, becomes available. An NPC named Desiree runs the shop, so you’ll need to speak with her whenever you want to acquire new rewards. You can see all of the known rewards which become available to you after achieving a specific level of Renown in the table below.

As you can see above, there’s a title associated with each Renown threshold that you reach, but this doesn’t reflect anything in terms of how you’ll be viewed or referred to in game. However, you will find a note from various patrons associated with each reward bundle when you come to claim it, which adds a nice touch to the lore aspect of the system. You can view these whenever you speak with Desiree at The Patron’s Whisper, alongside the reward available for that specific threshold.
The Berserker Ring and Other Rewards¶
Note that you won’t be able to see all of the available rewards and messages at once when you speak with Desiree. Instead, they will gradually become available as your Renown increases. Even if you don’t plan on farming Renown via side quests or Hunts as you play through the main story, you’ll soon have enough to at least get the Berserker Ring, which is a useful accessory if you want to maximize your damage output after using a Precision Dodge.
How to Earn Renown in FFXVI¶
Renown can be earned in FFXVI by completing Main Quests, Side Quests, and Hunts (also known as Notorious Marks). You can earn a decent amount from each of these tasks, and if you complete all of them you should have enough to obtain all of the rewards on offer at The Patron’s Whisper.
Not all of the rewards are worth bothering with, but there are plenty that you cam make use of and they only get better as you earn more Renown. Once you’ve obtained a specific amount of Renown you can’t lose it again, so the amount that you earn will only go up, and it’ll increase in increments with each quest or Hunt that you complete. Be sure to visit The Patron’s Whisper regularly to check whether you’ve earned enough Renown for the next set of rewards.
