The most substantial content in Final Fantasy XVI, there are 68 main quests that collectively tell Clive’s story. Some main quests are incredibly short and require very little input from the player, being semi-interactive cutscenes or simply requiring you to walk around talking to a handful of NPCs. Other main quests are protracted dungeons consisting of a midboss, a multi-stage dungeon boss and numerous minibosses. Yet others are functionally subquest phases of other quests, which themselves vary significantly in duration and complexity. All main quests are not created equally.
Points of No Return in FF16¶
There are two “points of no return” during the main questline where further progression may cause you to miss out on any outstanding side content. The first is before Main Quest 26: The Crystal’s Curse, which marks the point of no return for some side quests - complete every side quest available to you at this time if you don’t want to miss them! The second is Main Quest 67 Back to Their Origin, which is the point of no return for the endgame. Traveling to Origin will start Of Gods and Men, which is pretty much just the final battle. While there is New Game + in Final Fantasy XVI, there is no post-game play, so you can’t cleanup any outstanding Side Quests or Hunts if you skip them, aside from reloading an earlier save. This is further complicated by the fact that over a dozen new side quests and five hunts begin during Back to Their Origin, so you’ve no real choice but to do quite a bit of endgame busywork if you don’t want to miss anything.
List of Points of No Return in FF16¶
Point of No Return | Missables | Solution |
---|---|---|
The Crystal’s Curse | All currently unlocked Side Quests | Complete all available side quests during Righting Wrongs |
Of Gods and Men | All side quests, hunts, trophies, treasure and exploration | Complete everything you want during Back to Their Origin |
List of Main Quests in FF16¶
Below you’ll find a list of all the main quests in Final Fantasy XVI. Aside from the first few missions, which are mostly tutorials (main quests 1 - 8, Fanning Embers is where the core gameplay loop begins), FF16 has a fairly regular rhythm, sandwiching lengthy dungeons between short filler quests that mostly serve to move the story from one major event to another (introducing new crafting recipes, side quests and hunts) and the odd bout of exploration in one of the game’s four open “field” areas.
Main quests may be the major focus of FF16, don’t neglect the side content, collectibles, and, of course, the New Game + playthrough on Final Fantasy Mode:
