FF16 - Caulk & Bawl Side Quest Walkthrough

By
Shane Williams

The Caulk & Bawl side quest in Final Fantasy 16 can be acquired at "The Hideaway" iconThe Hideaway once you reach The Gathering Storm main quest. Here you’ll find an NPC named "Obolus" iconObolus, who is the Hideaway’s ferryman. He’ll tell you that the boat he uses is very close to being unusable and asks Clive to find some Pitcher Wax which he can use to fix it. We’ll take you through the necessary steps to finding Thorny Thistles and obtaining the Pitcher Wax on this page.

Speak with !Obolus on The Pier to begin this quest.

Hideaway ferryman Obolus estimates his skiff will not last another fortnight before the Blighted water of Bennumere eats straight through its hull and condemns it to the lakebed. Fortunately, he knows exactly what the boat needs to avoid this grim fate…and exactly where Clive can find it.

How to Start the Caulk & Bawl Side Quest in Final Fantasy 16

First things first, you’ll need to have completed the main story mission Home, Sweet Home, and be on The Gathering Storm. When those requirements have been met, head over to Obolus who can be found standing at The Pier area of The Hideaway. Speak with him and you’ll learn that his boat is gradually being destroyed from the blight and he needs Clive’s help to come up with a temporary fix.

Where to Find Thorny Thistles

Once you’re done speaking with Obolus you’ll need to find some Pitch which is only obtained via Pitch Trees and they can’t be found anywhere nearby, so instead Obolus asks that you look for Thorny Pitchers instead as they cover themselves in a sticky wax which could be useful for repairing his boat. You’ll want to stock up on "Potion" iconPotions at "Charon" iconCharon’s Toll, then you’ll want to fast travel over to the "Three Reeds" iconThree Reeds "Obelisk" iconObelisk and head to the southern portion of this area to reach Coeurltail Falls.

Here you’ll come across five Thorny Thistles which are just regular enemies, so they shouldn’t cause you too much trouble. The easiest way to take them down is by grouping them up with "Ignition" iconIgnition and then using any AoE Ability, such as "Aerial Blast" iconAerial Blast. Whilst this attack is gradually depleting their health, you’ll want to throw in a couple of "Magic Burst" iconMagic Bursts and any other available abilities like "Heatwave" iconHeatwave to speed up the process. After you’ve successfully cleared out the Thorny Thistles you’ll obtain Pitcher Wax x5.

You’ll now want to return to The Hideaway, but before you do so, consider exploring the surrounding areas, as you may find some Chests that’ll contain useful Accessories. Upon returning to The Hideaway, speak with Obolus and give him the Pitcher Wax to bring the quest to a close and you’ll be rewarded with the "Badge of Might +1" iconBadge of Might +1. This will increase your attack power by 12.

Other Side Quests in The Hideaway

As you’re playing through the Main Quest you’ll find more Side Quests pop up in the Hideaway, so it’s a good idea to check back often. Below is a list of all the currently available Side Quests:

On Balance The Shelves
An Eye for an Eye The Rear Stacks
Cut from the Cloth Boarding Dock
