As you begin to reach the last third of Final Fantasy 16, you’ll notice that you need some materials to craft the best equipment in the game. Some of these materials you won’t have seen up until this point, and Darksteel is one of them. You’ll need a couple of these to craft some of the best Gear that FFXVI has to offer. This page will detail where you can find Darksteel, and what you need them for.
Darksteel Location in FF16¶
There are only two pieces of Darksteel that you can obtain in Final Fantasy 16, and both of them are from A-Rank Hunts.
First Darksteel Location¶
The first one you can acquire is from Thanatos, Usher of the Underworld who will be available after completing the Brotherhood main scenario quest. You can find Thanatos in Titan’s Wake, Dhalmekia. Teleport to the Kretov obelisk, and exit via the northeastern path. Follow this path east and before long, you’ll reach Titan’s Wake where you’ll find Thanatos.
Thanatos Hunt¶
Thanatos is a relatively easy hunt where its charge attack will probably be the only thing to hit you. It’s exactly the same as the boss you fought in the Reverie Tower leading up to Barnabas. The main attacks to watch out for are Destrudo, Spirits Without, and its charge. The charge attack is exactly the same as every other charge attack in the game, just dodge when its about to hit you, or move out of its path. Spirits Without will fire a laser around the room, stay close to Thanatos, and dodge whenever the beam reaches you. One other attack is Thanatos’ jump and slam where it’ll create shockwaves. This can easily be jumped over. Finally, Destrudo will place multiple blue traps over the floor which will explode consecutively. After defeating it, you’ll be rewarded one piece of Darksteel. Second Darksteel Location¶
For the second piece, it’ll require a bit more work. First of all, you’ll need to progress the main scenario to the last quest in the game which the game will make obvious to you at that point. Then you’ll need to complete both of the Under Management side quests (I and II) before finally, speaking to Jill. Now Teleport to the Northreach obelisk in Sanbreque and exit the town via the north. Once you’re in the Royal Meadows, head west then north toward Cape Orsiere to find the Prince of Death Hunt.
The Prince of Death Hunt¶
For an A-Rank, the Prince of Death is surprisingly tough. Similar to the Fallen Lich enemies you’ve encountered thus far, it will teleport around the place using sweeping multi-hit scythe attacks which can be difficult to avoid, or it’ll unleash numerous projectiles at you from range. Fortunately, it doesn’t have a strong Will-Gauge, and a couple of Lightning Rod > Diamond Dusts will be enough to stagger him. When staggered, raise the damage multiplier as high as you can, preferably to x1.50, and finish it with a Gigaflare. Two of these will be enough to dispatch the Hunt. After defeating both Hunts, you’ll have the required Darksteel needed to craft the equipment. For the full Prince of Death guide, go to our Prince of Death hunt strategy here.
What is Darksteel Used For?¶
You’ll need two pieces of this rare metal to craft the best weapon in the game during of the first play-through, Gotterdammerung. Although you have the required two Darksteel, you’ll also need other materials along with it. Fortunately, we have you covered here with our How to Get Gotterdammerung page!
