FF16 - The Root of the Problem Side Quest Walkthrough

By
Shane Williams

The Root of the Problem side quest in Final Fantasy 16 can be acquired in "The Hideaway" iconThe Hideaway once you reach the After the !Storm main quest. Here you’ll find a person named Nigel and he’ll ask you to find morganbeards, so he can make better medicine. We’ll take you through the necessary steps to completion and where to find the Morganbeards.

Speak with Nigel to begin this quest.

At the hideaway, medicine is in constant short supply, but botainst "Nigel" iconNigel is of a mind to change that. If he can get his hands on several samples of morganbeard-a rare flower renowned for its curative properties he plans to cultivate his own in the backyard…or at least try to.

How to Start The Root of The Problem in Final Fantasy 16

First things first, you’ll need to have completed the main story mission Fire and Ice, and be on the After the !Storm. When those requirements have been met, head over to Nigel in The Backyard and he’ll ask you for a favor. He’ll mention that there is a rare plant called Morganbeard which grows in Rosaria and would like you to try and find it so he makes better kinds of medicine for everyone at the Hideaway.

Where to Find Morganbeards in FF16

After you’ve finished speaking with Nigel, fast travel to "Martha's Rest" iconMartha’s Rest and take the elevator on the west side down to the Sorrowise sub-region. Here you’ll want to follow the path around until you reach the westernmost side, then you’ll come across the Morganbeards. However, it’s surrounded by multiple small "Goblins" iconGoblins and a "Gigas" iconGigas Ploughswain. Here you’ll want to ignore the large enemy for now and instead group up the smaller enemies and use your AoE (Area of Effect) Abilities, such as "Aerial Blast" iconAerial Blast to deplete their health, then finish them off with a simple magic burst.

When you shift your attention onto the Gigas Ploughswain things will get a bit more trickier as he has stronger attacks and more health then the regular enemies, so you’ll want to make use of magic bursts to get his health down to the half-stagger point, then pull him down to the ground using "Deadly Embrace" iconDeadly Embrace. Here you’ll want to make use of "Gouge" iconGouge to stagger him before he gets back up. Once you’ve staggered him, you’ll want to use "Lightning Rod" iconLightning Rod in front of and activate your "Limit Break" iconLimit Break, then use all of your abilities at once to deal large amounts of damage.

As for attacks Gigas can perform a ground slam where he’ll lift his weapon above his head and slam it down directly in front of him, so you’ll want to be standing to the side to avoid this. Throughout the battle he’ll perform “Big Swing” which will involve him swinging his weapon around in a circle repeatedly whilst moving towards you, so you’ll want to keep your distance until he stops. Whilst avoiding these attacks you’ll want to repeat the process and you should take him down after two staggers.

How to Upgrade Your Potion Potency

After you’ve defeated all the enemies, pick up the three nearby Morganbeards, then return to the Hideaway and give Nigel Morganbeards. This will bring the quest to a close and you’ll be rewarded with the Morganbeard Extract which will increase the amount of health that your "Potion" iconPotions will heal you for.
