After completing the Fire and Ice story quest in Final Fantasy 16, Hortense will ask you for a favor. She’ll ask you to collect her cloth from the merchant in Northreach as it’s still overdue. Read below to find out what choices to make as well as a complete walkthrough for the Cut from the Cloth Side Quest in FF16.
Hortense is a busy woman, and when she’s not seeing that the hideaway’s shelves remain stocked, her days are spent hemming kirtles and mending britches. A long-delayed delivery of linen from the draper in Northreach, however, is preventing her from this important task, and so she has asked Clive to collect the cloth in her stead the next time he is in northern Sanbreque.
How to Start the Cut from the Cloth Side Quest in FF16.¶
First things first, you’ll need to have completed the main story mission Fire and Ice, and be on After the Storm. When those requirements have been met, head over to Hortense on the Boarding Dock, near the stairs, and she’ll ask you for a favor.
She’ll explain to you that the children need some more clothes as they are tattered, but she needs some more linen to make them. Apparently, she has been waiting on an order from the draper in Northreach, but it’s been delayed for a few days now, so she wants you to see what’s the hold up.
Visit the Draper in Northreach¶
Teleport to Northreach which is situated in the northeast of the World Map, and speak to the Draper who can be found at the stall to the left of the entrance, and hand over the Handwritten Receipt to her. She’ll give her apologies to you, and explain that she doesn’t have your goods as they were due to arrive from Boklad, but they haven’t arrived yet. Her mother thinks it might be bandits, and you’re inclined to believe that as well. You’ll ask her if the caravan was supposed to come from the south before telling her that you’re going to retrieve her goods.
Search the road for the missing caravan¶
Leave via the southern exit, and follow the road south, go across the bridges, then continue following the path until you reach a waylaid caravan on the side of the road. As you approach the caravan, you’ll find two men having an argument. Speak to the Traveling Trader to find out what’s going on. After a bit of back and forth, you’ll find out they’re bandits…what a surprise. The Maddened Merchant will call out his hired heavy to come to fix the problem.
Defeat “Killer”¶
The hired heavy is an imposing figure who is aptly named Killer, and you’ll have to defeat him. Killer is an Elite enemy with a Will-Gauge and wields a large club/axe/weapon. Like most enemies of this nature, they hit hard, but they are very slow and easy to exploit. He doesn’t have many attacks, but here is what to expect:
Attack | Description | Counter |
---|---|---|
Wide Sweep | Killer will swing its weapon in a large arc in front of him. | Stay back to avoid the attack, or use dodge when the weapon reaches the middle of him. The former is safer while the latter will give you a Precision Dodge where you can punish him. |
Overhead Slam | Killer will raise his weapon behind his head before slamming it down onto you. | Dodge either side to avoid the attack. If you wait until the weapon is about to hit your head, you can perform a Precision Dodge. |
Wide Sweep Combo | Similar to the first attack, just Killer will perform a follow-up in quick succession. | The same rule applies to this attack as Wild Sweep. |
This shouldn’t cause you too many problems provided you don’t underestimate the damage that Killer’s attacks can do. For this reason, try not to be too aggressive, and wait for an opening such as after he’s swung his weapon. The Garuda ability, Rook’s Gambit is perfect for this battle, as it allows you to counter his attacks with it while also dealing large Will damage in the same attack especially as his attacks are slow thus making it easier to time. Another great ability to use is Gouge. Use this after you break his Will-Gauge at the halfway spot, and Gouge should take care of the rest of the gauge, or at least take it close.
Once you’ve dealt with “Killer”, you’ll get a short scene before ending back up at the Draper in Northreach. The Traveling Merchant and you will explain to her what happened, and the Draper will reward you with some extra materials on top of your order as a way of thanks.
Deliver the cloth to Hortense¶
All that’s left to do now is head back to Hortense in the Hideaway. Open the World Map, and teleport back there, and speak to Hortense on the Boarding Dock. After finding out that she has extra material that you can have, you’ll explain to her that it didn’t cost anything extra, and it was payment for services rendered.
Black Embroidered Linen, White Continental Silk, or Lush Red Velvet Choices¶
As Hortense has the extra material, she’ll ask which material is most to your liking which gives you a choice. Unfortunately, the choice doesn’t appear to matter, at least yet as you will always get 50x Steelsilk as the reward. Either way, choose White continental Silk because why wouldn’t you want White continental Silk? After choosing your preferred material, the quest will end, rewarding you with 350 XP, 500 AP, 800 Gil, and 15 Renown.
