The Onward to Discovery side quest in Final Fantasy 16 can be acquired in The Boklad Markets once you reach the Onward main quest. Here you’ll find a person named Jachym and he’ll tell you about some nearby ruins that’ll he like to explore. We’ll take you through the necessary steps to completion and how to defeat the Wailing Echo
An excitable scholar of Dzemekian history hires Clive to watch over him while he investigates some ruins near Boklad, then promptly disappears before his newly hired bodyguard can so much as blink.
How to Start The Onward to Discovery Side Quest in Final Fantasy 16¶
First things first, you’ll need to have completed the main story mission Out of the Shadow, and be on Onward. When those requirements have been met, head over to Jachym who can be found in The Boklad Markets which is located in The Dhalmekian Republic. Speak with him and you’ll learn that he wants to investigate some of the nearby ruins but hasn’t been able to do so as he can’t defend himself, so he has requested that you accompany him in case he encounters an unfriendly foe.
Once you’ve finished speaking with Jachym, exit the market and you’ll notice that he has been surrounded by Ne’er-do-well enemies. Here you’ll want to simply clear them out by making use of your AoE Abilities, such as Aerial Blast or Heatwave, then a short scene will play out before you have to head further south to find Jachy being ambushed again. However, this time you’re up against Goblin Rabblerouser’s. Here you’ll want to repeat what you did with the last set of enemies and use any available AoE Abilities.
How to Defeat The Wailing Echo in FF16¶
After you’ve cleared out the second set of enemies, you’ll want to follow the path along to the southwest until you reach Laetny’s Cleft and you’ll find Jachy being surrounded by even more enemies. Unfortunately, one of these is an elite enemy so you’ll want to focus on taking down the regular enemies first before focusing on it. Once you’re one on one with the Wailing Echo you’ll want to chip away at his health with Magic Bursts until it reaches halfway point, then you’ll want to perform Gouge to quickly stagger it before it gets back on its feet.
Whilst it’s staggered you’ll want to place down Lightning Rod directly in front of it, then activate your Limit Break and combine any of your available abilities to deal as much damage as possible during this time. If it doesn’t die, then repeat this process and it should die after two full staggers. As for attacks there are four you wanna watch out for:
- Lunging Thrust - Whilst you’re attacking The Wailing Echo it’ll charge at you from a distance while pointing out its weapon and thrust it into you. If you’re close to him, it’ll be more of a lunge, hence the name.
- Thunder Balls - Throughout the battle The Wailing Echo will charge up for a few seconds and then shoot out two Thunder Balls at you in quick succession.
- Wide Slice - The Wailing Echo will twist its body before unleashing a sweeping Slice with its weapon.
- Explosive Shield - The Wailing Echo will charge up while providing itself a dome-like shield before it explodes into numerous smaller circles around itself. These will then explode afterwards.
Once you’ve cleared out the enemies Jachy will thank you and the quest comes to a close. Here you’ll be rewarded with Wyrrite x20 and The Breath of Earth (Upheavel) Accessory. This reduces the cooldown time by 3.5 seconds.
