Final Fantasy 16 has a lot of side content, and chief among them is obtaining the legendary sword, Gotterdammerung, which is also the ultimate weapon in the game (on your first playthrough at least). This page will detail all of the steps needed to take to get your hands on this powerful blade in FFXVI.
Where to get the Ultimate Weapon, Gotterdammerung Recipe in FF16¶
Like with the Excalibur earlier in the adventure, you’ll need to first find the design draft to add the Gotterdammerung to Blackthorne’s forge in The Hideaway. Interestingly, you can obtain this recipe long before you can actually find the materials for this blade. Once again, you’ll be looking for a Side Quest with the + marker to designate you will unlock something.
Before you can even attempt to undertake the necessary Side Quest, however, you’ll need to progress the Main Quest until you reach the Across the Narrow Quest, this is just before you visit the final region and in the closing stages of the adventure.
As you may expect, you’ll need to complete the final quest in the Blacksmith’s Blues questline, Blacksmith’s Blues IV. You will need to have ensured you’ve finished the other three Quests first, then you’ll find the final part available from August in The Mess. Speaking with him, you’ll learn of trouble back at Dravozd and he asks you to meet him there.
Follow this Quest to its conclusion (you’ll need to defeat a Canyon Chimera at the end of it), you’ll not only obtain the Design Draft for the Gotterdammerung, but also the Ragnarok, a powerful weapon for this stage of the game and also one of the components needed to craft the Gotterdammerung.
All Materials Needed for the Ultimate Weapon, Gotterdammerung¶
As you may expect by the Gotterdammerung being the most powerful weapon in the game, you’ll need the rarest materials in order to forge it, some of which you may already have. Below, you’ll find out where to find each and every material needed to craft the Gotterdammerung.
Ragnarok¶
The first material is by far the easiest, and one you won’t have to track down (just remember to not sell it!) as you’ll get it as a reward in the same Quest that you unlock the recipe for the Gotterdammerung. It will also be the most powerful weapon you can wield until the final store bought sword, Defender (upgraded to +2), so it’s good to use until you forge the Gotterdammerung.
Orichalcum¶
You’ll need to track down three Orichalcums to forge the Gotterdammerung and there are only a total of five of them in a single playthrough (you’ll need all of these if you wish to forge the ultimate armor too). Three of them come as Spoils from S Rank Hunts and the two remaining instances are from Side Quests available before the point-of-no-return. The table below will provide all of the details on where you can source Orichalcum:
Activity | Name | Location |
---|---|---|
Hunt | Atlas | East of Cressida, Rosaria |
Hunt | Gorgimera | West of the center of the Velkroy Desert in Dhalmekia |
Hunt | Behemoth King | Southwest of the Vidagraes Obelisk in Waloed |
Side Quest | Duty Undying II | Tabor in Dhalmekia |
Side Quest | Under New Management II | Northreach in Sanbreque |
Darksteel¶
The next rare material you’ll need to track down is Darksteel, and you’ll need two of these to forge the Gotterdammerung. Unlike Orichalcum which had two available from Side Quests, both of the Darksteels come from Hunts.
The Usher to the Underworld Hunt pits you up against Thanatos, and it will become available during the Brotherhood Main Quest. You’ll need to head east from the Kretov Obelisk in Dhalmekia until you reach Titan’s Wake where you’ll encounter the foe. Put him to the sword and you’ll get your first Darksteel.
The second, and final, Darksteel comes from the Grim Reaper Hunt. For this Hunt, you’ll be going up against the Prince of Death, another late-game Hunt. To reach the location of the Prince of Death, go to the west of the Royal Meadows in Sanbreque, then dispatch him to obtain your second piece of Darksteel.
Primitive Battlehorn¶
The final piece of the puzzle, you’ll only require a single Primitive Battlehorn, which is a good thing because there’s only one of them in a playthrough. Once you reach the Brotherhood Main Quest, you’ll find a Bill for the Gobermouch, an A Rank Hunt located by taking the western stairs found in the village of Eistla in the Waloed region.
Gotterdammerung Stats in FF16¶
Once you have all of the necessary materials, you can take them back to Blackthrone and craft the Gotterdammerung. Once complete, you’ll also obtain the Half Past Twilight Trophy. It doesn’t end there though, the Gotterdammerung is one of the components needed to forge the Ultima Weapon on Final Fantasy mode (New Game+)!
