FF16 - Weird Science Walkthrough

By
Matt Chard

During the “Out of the Shadow” story quest in Final Fantasy 16, you’ll get a side quest from the resident alchemist of the Hideaway, "Owain" iconOwain. He has created an alembic to help brew potions among other stuff, but it’s having a little trouble, the alembic can’t get rid of all the impurities. This is where you come in, he’ll ask you to retrieve some Bomb Ash which can only be found on the remains of the Bomb King, and naturally, he isn’t strong enough to defeat it, so he asks you. Read below for a full walkthrough on how to complete the Weird Science quest in Final Fantasy 16.

!Owain wants to make a new alembic, but he’s having some troubles.

How to Unlock the Weird Science Side Quest in FF16

Keep progressing the Out of the Shadow main story quest which has you doing a lot of small quests for Mid until you complete the "Mythril Engine" iconMythril Engine, and you have to speak to "Otto" iconOtto. This will open up a bunch of side quests with one of them being Weird Science. Make your way down to Mid’s Dungeon (Workshop) where you’ll find Owain. Speak to him to get the quest, and you’ll find out that you need Bomb Ash which only drops from the bones of a "Bomb King" iconBomb King.

Use the hunt board to locate the bomb king

If you read the bill on the Hunt Board, you’ll find out that the Bomb King can be found in The Crock, Sanbreque. You most likely haven’t been here yet, and it can be easy to miss if you haven’t. The Crock is directly south on the map of the Dragon’s Aery obelisk, but you’ll need to go through the Imperial Chase to get there. This can be found by heading as far south as you can in Dragon’s Aery, and heading towards the southwest exit. Just before the exit is another path heading south/southeast, this is the Imperial Chase. Follow the woody trail southeast and take the northern path at the crossroads to find the Bomb King.

(1 of 2) The Crock can be accessed via the southern path called the Imperial Chase which is situated in the south of Dragon’s Aery, Sanbreque.

Slay the bomb king in the Crock.

When you reach The Crock, you’ll get a short introduction of the Bomb King before you get to battle it. The Bomb King is a relatively weak Hunt, and shouldn’t cause you too many problems provided you don’t let the smaller bombs explode onto you. Other than that, dodge the Coronations, and punish the Bomb King. Click her for a full Bomb King Hunt strategy.

Gather bomb ash

Once you’ve defeated the Bomb King, make sure you collect the three Bomb Ashes from its remains.

Collect the three Bomb !Ash from the remains of the !Bomb King, and bring them back to !Owain in the Hideaway.

Deliver the bomb ash to Owain in the hideaway

Teleport back to the Hideaway, and give the Bomb Ash to Owain in Mid’s Dungeon. This will complete the quest, and after a short scene, you’ll receive a Treated Potion Satchel which is an upgrade to your “inventory”. This basically allows you to carry more quantities of your healing items.
