Clive and Jill continue their quest to take down the Mothercrystals, having turned their sights towards the Iron Kingdoms, which they hope to reach by securing the aid of Clive’s uncle in Port Isolde. Unfortunately for them, Clive’s family hinders as much as it helps, as Empress Anabella’s pogroms against the Branded and general repression against Rosarians in general has left the duchy in a sorry state. This page will cover the main quest Black Light Burns and its attendant subquest Black and White in Final Fantasy XVI, which begins shortly after approaching The Rose Gate at the end of Bloodlines, including all the treasures you can find, all the enemies you’ll encounter and strategies for defeating the Knight of the Lasting Dark Dragoon miniboss.

How to Infiltrate the Lazarus District - FF16 Black Light Burns Main Quest Walkthrough¶
Follow the road northeast back through The Silken Strand, then turn south to find a gate (you should be able to just follow the quest marker). Push open the gate to enter the Lazarus District and continue uphill to the left, hugging the wall to the left until you reach a chest containing 10x Spools of Steelsilk. Backtrack to the gate and follow the cobblestone road to the right this time, approaching an archway to trigger a cutscene, after which you’ll be fighting a host of Lazarus Bandits. A single Ignition should clear most of them up nicely, they’re mostly just rabble.
Win the fight to trigger another scene, and after much chatter Clive will find himself with some new - yet familiar - allies. When you’re back in control, turn right and plunder another chest to score 10x Pinches of Magicked Ash, then head through an archway to find a Guardian Quartermaster you can stock up at. When you’re ready, talk to Wade and the subquest Black and White will start and Wade will join your party as a companion.
How to Complete Black or White in Final Fantasy XVI - FF16 Black Light Burns Main Quest Walkthrough¶
When that chatter is done, your new objective will be to seek out and provoke the Black Shields. First step, head to Bewit Bridge, which just involves following the road to the north. When you approach, another scene will trigger, after which you’ll start throwing hands. First you’ll need to defeat a mob of Black Shields, including a Black Shield Captain and two spellcasters (most of the enemies, regardless of their capabilities, will simply be designated as “Black Shields”). Defeat them and reinforcements will arrive in the form of another pair of generic Black Shield enemies accompanying an Imperial War Aevis. Defeat the fodder and work on the Aevis, but be wary as a pair of Imperial War Wyrms will show up when the Aevis’ health drops low.
How to Defeat the Dragoon - Knight of the Lasting Dark - FF16 Black Light Burns Main Quest Walkthrough¶
After the Black Shields (and their pets) are dispatched, one last foe will arrive to challenge you - the leader of these Imperials, the Knight of the Lasting Dark. Fancy name, but he’s just another Dragoon, and he has even fewer tricks than the Knight of the Dying Sun you fought back during The Hunter and the Hunted. He’ll do all the standard Dragoon attacks, even switching up to Double Jump after you’ve thrashed him sufficiently, but he doesn’t have Mirage Dive, nor does he bring anything else new to the table. He’ll be joined by more Black Shields when he’s been weakened, but these are mere distractions, and you’ve got the power of three Eikons to pull from now, so this Dragoon shouldn’t be any more trouble than the Imperial War Aevis you just dispatched.
Defeat the Dragoon and the subquest Black or White will end. You’ll be treated to numerous scenes which advance the plot, after which you’ll find yourself back out on the world map. Just travel to The Hideout and Black Light Burns will also conclude. The next main quest, Here Be Monsters will begin when you return to The Hideout.
