The Duty Undying side quest in Final Fantasy 16 can be acquired in Tabor once you reach the Across the Narrow main quest. Here you’ll find a person named Cyril, who is a senior member of the Undying. He’ll bring you up to speed on their research into Ultima and he asks Clive to retrieve any new research from the survey team. We’ll take you through the necessary steps to completion and how to defeat the Fallen Echoes and Fool’s Gold you will encounter during this quest on this page.
Cyril tells Clive that a team of Undying are conducting a survey of a nearby Fallen ruin as part of their investigations into Ultima, and proposes that he make the short journey to Kretov to observe their work.
How to Start the Duty Undying Side Quest in Final Fantasy 16¶
First things first, you’ll need to have completed the main story mission Through the Maelstrom, and be on Across the Narrow. When those requirements have been met, head over to Cyril who can be found in Tabor. Speak with him and you’ll learn that he is on a quest to discover Ultima’s origin, but they aren’t having much luck, so he requests that you fetch the survey team’s reports to see if you can learn more.
How to Defeat the Fallen Echoes¶
You’ll now want to use the nearby shop to stock up on Potions, then fast travel to The Glided Path Obelisk and head west through Titan’s Wake until you reach Kretov. Here you’ll quickly discover the team was slain by multiple Fallen Echoes which will soon make themselves known to you. These are regular enemies, so as long as your equipment is up to date, then they shouldn’t cause you too much of a problem. Group up the enemies and then use Diamond Dust to take away most of their health, then place down an AoE Ability, such as Aerial Blast before finishing them off with any of your single target attacks like Heatwave.
How to Defeat the Fool’s Gold Elite Enemy¶
Once you’ve cleared out the first pack of enemies, head further up the hill and you’ll come across Fool’s Gold. This is an elite enemy, so it’ll require more caution and a proper strategy to take down. To begin, you’ll want to work on staggering it and Diamond Dust is one of the strongest attacks available to achieve that at this stage of the game, so use that. Then you’ll want to chip away at the rest of the bar with Magic Burst or Gouge if you have it equipped.
Upon staggering it you’ll want to quickly place down Lightning Rod in front of it, then activate your Limit Break before unleashing Gigaflare. If you have this upgraded, then it should take its health below half. Now you’ll want to repeat this process to successfully take it down. However, whilst you’re doing so you’ll want to watch out for the following attacks:
- Lunging Thrust - Fool’s Gold will charge at you from a distance while pointing its weapon and thrusting it into you.
- Thunder Balls - Fool’s Gold will shoot out two Thunder Balls at you in quick succession.
- Wide Slice - Fool’s Gold will twist its body before unleashing a sweeping Slice with its weapon.
After all the enemies have been dealt with, a short scene will play out, then you’ll want to return to Tabor and give the findings to Cyril to bring the quest to a close. Here you’ll be rewarded with The Breath of Ice (Ice Age). This will reduce the cooldown time for Ice Age by 1.5 seconds.
