How to Unlock the A Fine Hound Trophy in FF16

By
Scott Peers

The A Fine Hound trophy in Final Fantasy 16 is unlocked by executing five Precision Sic attacks with "Torgal" iconTorgal, Clive’s reliable companion and, as everyone knows, the real protagonist of the story. Torgal becomes available during the "Fanning Embers" iconFanning Embers main quest, so you’ll need to wait until then before you can begin working towards earning this trophy. It can be difficult to get the timing right for Precision Sic attack with Torgal, but we’ll give you the best advice to get this right.

!Torgal, the finest of fine hounds.

How to Perform Precision Sic Attacks with Torgal in FFXVI

After you reach the Fanning Embers main quest, Torgal will almost always be beside Clive as a combat companion. You can check your progress towards this point in the main story on our List of All Main Quests in Final Fantasy XVI page. The mechanics for controlling Torgal are fairly simple. As a hound (albeit a special one!) he has a limited number of abilities, restricted to Sic and Ravage in the form of attacks, and a simple heal ability which can heal Clive over time when used, so long as Clive is within the required radius.

It’s useful to note that Torgal’s heal ability will only heal a specific amount of recoverable health. This will be marked by a darker shade of green on Clive’s health bar, and it will only be visible for a short period of time immediately after Clive has been hit by an attack.

Difference Between Precision Sic and Precision Ravage Attacks

You may be wondering what the difference is between the Sic and Ravage attacks, since both can appear as Precision Sic in the combat log on the right side of the screen if you execute them at the end of a combo. However, if you use the attacks in the Hall of Virtue training arena, you’ll notice that they appear separately as Precision Sic and Precision Ravage in the more detailed combat log on the left side of the screen.

In general Precision Ravage will inflict more damage to enemy HP, while Precision Sic will inflict more stagger (aka "Will" iconWill) damage. You can use them depending on which you think you need most during a particular fight. Sic is technically described as a ground-based attack, while Ravage is described as an aerial melee attack, but both become aerial melee attacks if you execute their Precision forms. You will improve the effectiveness of both attacks the more you use them in combat.

You can view !Torgal’s attributes and the progress you’ve made with his attacks by pressing R1 from the Attributes menu.

How to Time Precision Sic Attacks Correctly With Torgal

As you might expect, you need to execute a genuine Precision Sic attack for it to count towards this trophy. You can only do this by executing a Sic attack at specific moments during combat. The easiest way to do this is to first knock back an enemy with an attack from Clive, then quickly press DualSense-DPad-Up while you have Torgal’s abilities on shortcut (and not the Potions!). This will normally execute a regular Sic attack, but if you timed it correctly, just after the enemy is knocked back, a Precision Sic will be shown in the combat log.

The other way to tell when a Precision Sic attack has been landed successfully is to look at Torgal’s body and movements. He will glow red and often howl as a Precision Sic attack takes place, but he will also spin in the air towards the enemy. The exact animation will vary depending on how large the enemy is that you’re attacking, and whether they’re on the ground or in the air. However, so long as Torgal is within range, the Precision Sic should be executed without any problems.

Another scenario where a Precision Sic can be executed is at the end of one of Clive’s combos. The simplest combo you can do to achieve this is by executing four melee attacks in a row by pressing DualSense-ButtonSquare four times. This will only work if Clive isn’t interrupted during the chain, so the best time to do it is against a boss when they’re staggered, at which point there is nothing that can hit you unless there are additional enemies in the area.

There are other, fancier combos that you can execute a Precision Sic at the end of, such as with "Magic Burst" iconMagic Burst or at the end of a "Limit Break" iconLimit Break chain of melee attacks. These are generally more difficult, but if you can master their attack patterns or just become familiar with them intuitively after using them enough times, you should get the hang of it. The key is to hit the DualSense-ButtonSquare as soon as possible after the combo, since if you wait for even just one second, the window of opportunity will be gone.

If you’re still struggling to execute any of these combos, you can also equip the Ring of Timely Assistance, which will ensure that Torgal’s attacks are executed at the right time automatically. However, the main problem with this is that you can’t choose which attack is executed, so it’s generally more reliable to learn the combos and get the timing right yourself. You only need to do this five times to unlock the A Fine Hound trophy, so you can forget about this technique if you don’t like it after that!
