The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

How to Use Zonai Fan Devices in Tears of the Kingdom

By
Nathan Garvin

As you travel from the second shrine (In-isa Shrine) to the third shrine (Gutanbac Shrine) on Great Sky Island you’ll encounter another element of Zonai technology you’ll need to utilize in order to progress. This page will discuss Zonai Fans, including how to combine them with other objects and how to activate and power them in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How to Use Zonai Fans in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The first few puzzles you’ll come across have built-in means of acceleration, usually gravity, but natural wind will also help you cross a body of water to reach the second shrine ("In-isa Shrine" iconIn-isa Shrine) on Great Sky Island. After this, however, you’ll find a similar puzzle tasking you with crossing some water, but this time you won’t have wind assisting you, and later on you’ll need to propel minecarts up a track - something gravity won’t assist with.

(1 of 4) Attach fans to objects you need to propel,

To remedy this problem, you’ll start finding Zonai fans lying around - metallic circular devices that will provide thrust when powered. To use Zonai fans in such a manner, make use of the "Ultrahand" iconUltrahand ability (Joy-Con-L) to rotate (Joy-Con-R + Joy-Con-DPad-Filled) and attach (Joy-Con-ButtonA) the fan according to your needs. Zonai fans have two distinct sides - the front is a flat surface from whence the air will be expelled, and the back features a smaller connector nub - you need the front of the fan facing in the opposite direction from where you want to travel, usually meaning you need to connect the small connector nub on the back of the fan to the back of whatever device you want to propel (a minecart, raft, etc.). Attaching the fan backwards or otherwise installing it in such a way that it won’t push you in the direction you want to go is allowed, and since most fans are found lying on the ground, you’ll need to rotate them a bit to get them in position. Just remember Newton: “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”.

Once you have your fan attached properly, you need to get the thing running. Fortunately Zonai technology is rugged and, at least from an operator’s perspective, simple: just give the fan a whack with whatever weapon you have at your disposal (Joy-Con-ButtonY) and the fan will start up. Just make sure you’re on the device/platform you want to move before you start the fan! Like most Zonai devices, the fan’s power isn’t unlimited. As long as a fan runs, it’ll consume power from your "Energy Cell" iconEnergy Cell. The power consumption is slow, but if you have to cross vast distances, you may find yourself running low, and if you’re using a Zonai fan, it’s safe to say that unpowered travel isn’t possible and likely even acted against by gravity or some other force - to avoid losing progress you may need to provide supplemental power by consuming "Zonai Charge" iconZonai Charges.

You can also use the fans to create gusts of wind upwards, that you can then paraglide upwards on! You won’t unlock your paraglider until later on, however. You can head over to our guide on how to get the paraglider for more information! For example, in Ishodag Shrine (one of the first shrines you’ll encounter in Hyrule Kingdom), you’ll need to use this method to progress through the shrine!

In Ishodag Shrine, for example, you’ll need to use the fan’s gust of wind to progress!

Where to Get Fan Zonai Capsules

Below, you’ll find a list of Zonai device dispensers where you could obtain some Fan zonai devices. Each dispenser is unique and contains different devices, so you’ll need to go to specific ones if you want to obtain certain Zonai devices. You can also find zonai device capsules in chests.
